Loadshedding: Taking Energy out of Business

With South Africa jumping between loadshedding levels, a lot of people and businesses are concerned about the future of the country’s power and if it will ever improve on its current state.

Recently, experts in the energy sectors have told the Sunday Times that the repair work at Eskom is incorrect and/or inefficient. Instead of addressing long-term problems that lead to their failure, Eskom is repairing structures to get them back into operation as quickly as possible.

Eskom is also putting its focus and energy into new projects which will not be online for several years. This makes it extremely unlikely that our loadshedding situation will improve soon which will have a direct impact on our country’s economy and the livelihood of businesses.

Economists have also mentioned that South Africa’s GDP growth will likely fall to just 1.2% next year if our country continues to struggle with its current plan of loadshedding which looks to be the current status quo.

Even though Eskom has downgraded to stage 4 recently it remains at the highest levels seen to this date. Bloomberg did an analysis showing that there have been more than 2276 gigawatt hours cut by Eskom this year so far in South Africa. This means that our country has passed the 90% mark of the gigawatt hours cut for the entire year of 2021 and we have recently only passed our halfway mark of the year calendar sitting in July right now.

With less than 6 months remaining in 2022, there is little to no doubt that we will record the worst year of loadshedding compared to previous years.

The graph from MyBroadband reveals that there have been substantially more hours of stage 4 load-shedding than in 2021.

Eskom is currently actively trying to improve its structure by repairing and building new power plants throughout South Africa. ProfitHub has financed purchase orders just like these and various other orders issued by Eskom to
